Artist's Biography
Susan Spies’ abstract paintings are a reflection on the places where man and landscape intersect; cantivlevered steel structures that reach across water; houses built into hillsides; and a highway as it curves along rolling hills or spans valleys.
Spies’ paintings illustrate the notion of vastness, ponder one’s assertion over it, and capture the experience of land, water, space, time, and light. We love the softness of her palette, the muted tones of sky and water, the play of light, and the sense of perspective that comes from all the layers of thinly applied paint. Although her paintings have depth and complexity, the overall effect is a soothing and calming presence.
Raised on the East Coast and a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Art, Susan currently lives on the West Coast. She is a frequent exhibitor in California galleries and many of her paintings belong in private collections across the country.
