Artist's Biography
We were instantly wowed by the rich colors and tactile texture of Zoë Martell’s abstract paintings. We find it fascinating that they are heavily influenced by her work as a psychotherapist. Martell’s work plays to both the conscious and unconscious minds of her audience. Her paintings subtly depict the complexity of the human experience; the use of balance, depth, and movement evokes in the viewer personal experiences of growth, harmony, and positive change, while more static and linear pieces may recall times of desperation, stagnation, and despair.
Zoe tells us she feels each piece is an invitation for the viewer to engage emotionally with the art, recalling his or her own history and projecting this onto the painting. The history recalled and the interaction with that history and the works provokes a unique experience in each viewer of the multi-faceted nature of our existence – joy, sorrow, elation, fear, and desperation are often contained within a single piece. This leads the viewer to a complex experience of the painting, and the opportunity to examine hidden aspects of him or herself and of the myriad and shifting states of the human psychological experience.
Zoe’s work is placed in collections in the United States and Australia. She studied Fine Art at Humboldt and San Francisco State Universities.
