Artist's Biography

Lisa Meyer-Kairos’ encaustic paintings struck a chord with us.  First, we loved the mixed media, the layers of texture and color, and the addition of Lisa’s “bits and pieces” she finds along the way.  Second, after some reflection, we realized these paintings are about much more than just uniquely-rendered dresses.  A conversation with Lisa confirmed this.  “The series grew out of my thoughts about my daughter growing up and what it means culturally to be a girl in our society,” she told us.  “That said, they are a subject that allows me to play with my medium in an intuitive way, building up layers and color together until the piece resolves itself, both in structure and meaning.”

Lisa delicately adds imagery and texture that acts as counterpoint to the innocent quality of the dresses.  Old photographs, words, numbers, and illustrations from old dictionaries find new life in her paintings.  The odd county fair admission ticket or an “inspected by” stub can also be found.  The transparent layers and the scraped back textures make plain the process or the history of each individual piece. Ultimately, the dress series is about memory, personal histories, and the ordinary context that it all plays out in.

We started carrying the dress series last year, and we sold out of them about as soon as we hung them.  So we asked Lisa to paint more, and this is the result of her very latest series, all with the wonderful memoribilia that evoke the nostalgia of raising, something we are rather familiar with at the gallery.  This new series of dresses is priced at $550 each, and they are all 12" x 12" on board.

We're delighted to introduce other new series of work by the arist as well, which includes nests in different sizes, all very "organic" in nature and highly original in texture and composition.  We know that Lisa also has some wonderful landscapes, also done in series, that she will be sharing with us down the road.  We look forward to receiving these too.

Meyer-Kairos was born in California.  She received a B.A. in Studio Art (painting) from the University of California.
