Painting and art has always played a large part in Mark Singer’s life.Born in Colorado and raised in the United States and Europe, Singer began his painting career at an early age, by copying paintings hanging in his parent’s home.He was also heavily influenced by his grandparents, both respected San Francisco artists in their day.His grandparent’s friendships with artists such as Ansel Adams, Beniamino Bufano and George Sterling left their mark on Singer and, as a developing artist, he began to gravitate to a looser, more spontaneous form of self-expression.“For me,” he says, “painting is my preferred way to revealing the more provocative characteristics of things considered commonplace.”
A Mark Singer painting is easily recognizable by his use of the palette knife. With this tool, Singer is able to dexterously create work that ranges from thickly applied impasto to pigment applied so delicately as to trick the viewer into thinking they are looking at brushwork. In fact, Joel Groover of Art and Antiques Magazine has called Singer’s ability to wield the palette knife “deft.”
Singer’s work is also impulsive, joyous and full of energy and enthusiasm, just like the artist himself. He employs a wide range of painting styles as well as a playful wit when choosing his subjects (we’re partial to his thickly layered and color-drenched still lifes, but his tongue-in-check rendition of “Too Many Chefs in the Kitchen” was an instant hit!)
In his own words:“Though my work is representational in style, my paintings are created to communicate with others at a deeper level. It is my hope that each painting will carry the viewer beyond a literal interpretation of the image presented to a more thoughtful examination of shared human experience.”
Mark’s work hangs in private and corporate collections around the United States and in many countries.
Mark has also been known for his remarkable dog paintings, and we have never seen any dog portraits as distinctive, charming, alive and full of character as those lovingly painted by Mark.
