Lorraine Christe is the artist whose mesmerizing work unabashedly examines love. Tinged with a delicate poignancy, Christie's paintings are all about the relationships between the people -- and the yearnings and misunderstandings that love always brings. Christie begins a painting the way most artists finish one: by naming it. (We've always loved her evocative titles that set the stage for the painting.) A master of composition, color and light, Christie paints her mysterious figures in such a way that leaves the viewer curious: Are they in love? Are they breaking up? How long has he loved her? Does she know? With her trademark jolts of bright yellow, red or orange, these wonderful paintings spark many a conversation -- or quiet reflection of the viewer's own loves.

Artist's Biography

Lorraine Christie (b. 1967) was born in Belfast, Ireland.  She is a classically trained artist who prefers to say she is self-taught as it has taken years of living to develop her constantly evolving style.  Noted for her still-life paintings in luscious oils, Christie’s success started in her native Ireland and has spread world-wide.

We are struck by Christie’s evocative and emotional urban street scenes that blur the lines between love, passion, pain and bliss.  Often painted over gold leaf applied to the canvas, these works are luminous and thought-provoking.  Christie is a  master at telling a story on canvas and the allure of her work is to lose oneself in the events unfolding in the painting.  Her softly painted backgrounds hint vaguely at European cities or New York, but one is never quite sure.

As you study her paintings, you can’t help but be struck by her wide range of talent.  Delicate but spontaneous use of brushstrokes make her landscapes glow.  Her nudes combine the use of light, shadow, texture and color to produce images that are sophisticated and elegant.  Still lifes are handsome compositions of mouth-wateringly ripe fruits or full-blown flower vases arranged on richly textured tablecloths.  She’s at ease with a wide variety of subject and the results are paintings that are breathtakingly beautiful, mysterious, evocative and brilliantly painted.

Lorraine Christie has had years of success abroad, where she has shown at the W.H. Patterson Gallery and the Mall Gallery in London as well as the Jorgenson Gallery in Dublin.  HRH Prince Charles owns two of her still-lifes and also judged her work at London’s elite Discerning Eye competitive exhibition. Of course, she is hugely popular right here in Atlanta, where she currently lives.  Her works are included in many private and corporate collections around the world.  Recently, the Ulster Museum, Belfast, acquired  two of her paintings for their permanent collection.  Her work also hangs at Trinity College in Belfast. The artist was also featured in a glowing article in American Art Collector magazine, December 2006 issue.
