THE MAINE ATTRACTION

The Red Hut, Casco Bay by Millie Gosch
We are delighted to host a show of seven Atlanta artists who visited the coast of Maine this summer, in an artists' retreat at the beautiful Rock Gardens Inn in Phippsburg.   We will showcase the work of these accomplished Atlanta artists at our gallery September 6th, 7th and 8th.  We hope you will join us for the reception honoring "The Seven" on September 6th, from 6 to 8 p.m.   Here is a small sampling of paintings that will be featured in the show with additional images on the artists' pages, which are linked by their names below.

Take seven dedicated painters who are constantly striving to improve their skills and fly them to Maine for a week in a setting designed for artists  … and you get MAGIC. When all distractions disappear and painting becomes the sole mission for a week, the collective energy is palpable. Participating in what is described in the brochure of Rock Gardens Inn on Casco Bay as Artists Retreat Weekis an artist’s dream come true.  Standing on rock formations that stretch into the sea like giant fingers, the artists see a sky that is filled with classic cloud formations and a range of blues that no palette can contain. Although some have never been to Maine before, the imagery is profoundly familiar because it fills paintings in books and museum catalogues that are well-worn and familiar. Masterful work by artists such as Andrew Wyeth, Edward Hopper, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer and Robert Henri are recalled as scenes are absorbed by some for the first time.

The Seven is a group of like-minded artists who began painting together about two years ago. Some have worked and exhibited together much longer and some have recently become a part of the group. They found as they worked together that they shared goals and beliefs and admired many of the same artists. Although there is a wide range of styles within the group, they are all devoted to the development of an authentic, individual response to the imagery that inspires them. Jan Eubanks, Millie Gosch, Dianne Harrison, Juanita Kauffman, Georgia Nagle, Kate Pendleton, and Elsa Sibley share a deep respect for the artists of the past who dedicated themselves to plein air painting. Historically artists work directly in a small scale to capture the essential elements of light and form of a particular scene. The brief window of time in which light and weather remain constant does not always allow an artist to finish a painting on site. These field studies may become fully resolved paintings or may be used as studies for further studio work.

For “The Seven,” the week of June 10 through 16 in Maine became one of information gathering and inspiration. Each day included morning and afternoon painting and evenings provided lively interchanges, welcome feedback and a new look at the day’s paintings. The Casco Bay area, the lobster village of Westpoint, Boothbay and various coves and harbors provided endless inspiration. A highlight of the week was a boat trip to Cundy Harbor, described by the boat captain as the quintessential Maine fishing village. Sunsets were stunning along the bay and sunrises lit the white boats floating peacefully in the harbor. The rock formations that bordered the shore provided a variety of textures, colors and forms. Some painters tackled the lobster traps and wharves that are so much a part of the Maine experience. Others concentrated on the skiffs pulled ashore waiting for the tide to change.

The Seven will exhibit together at Huff Harrington Fine Art in their premier group show opening on Thursday, September 6 from 6:00-8:00pm. Plein air and studio paintings from their trip to Maine will be on exhibit through Saturday, September 8 and continue on-line through December. Invited to paint and show with the group were Roger Dale Brown and Beverly Ford Evans from Nashville.
